Hello Lea,

I am so pleased that you contacted me. Yes...this is the same family that
you are related to.

Robert McAdam and Sarah Gordon eloped to England. They married in
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland Co. in 1880 (Oct/Nov/Dec. Quarter).

The 1881 Census for England show them living with Robert's Widowed mother
Catherine McAdam (nee Strong) at #76 Prince Consort Rd., Gateshead, Durham
Co. He is listed as a Grocer.

Their first daughter Eleanor (Nell) McAdam was born in 1881 in Gateshead,
Durham Co. Their only son John McAdam was born in 1884 in Newcastle-upon
Tyne, Tynemouth, Northumberland Co. Kate McAdam born 1886 & Annie Gordon
McAdam born 1888 were also born in Newcastle.

In 1890 they left England for South Africa and arrived in Port Elizabeth.
Elizabeth 'Bessie' McAdam was born in 1890 & Sarah 'Sadie' McAdam was born
in 1896 (both born in Port Elizabeth).

I have attached 'The Gordon Family Story' written by Eileen Mary Corrigan.
Her mother was Ann Jane Gordon who married Rev. Wm. Corrigan and was Sarah
McAdam's sister. It is a wonderful history of the Gordon Family and is
easier to follow with the family tree which I will also send. On page #21,
Eileen tells the story of Robert McAdam, a brief family history and of
course the elopement of Robert & Sarah. Eileen wrote the 'Gordon Family
Story' in 1967 for her Nephew before he was to visit his relations in Co.
Fermanagh. I think you will enjoy it.

I have somewhere but not scanned an article about Sarah McAdam (nee Gordon)
which includes a photograph of her sitting in a rocking chair on a porch
(she is very elderly in the photo). I will try and find it for you.

The family tree, which I will send as well as some old family photos starts
with Alexander Gordon when he arrived in Co. Fermanagh after the 1745
rebellion. He was a Jacobite and was on the list for execution. Hence the
speedy relocation to Co. Fermanagh where he had some relations.

I have another 'Gordon Family Tree' which includes Alexander and goes back
to 1011 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland (if you are interested).

The family tree was compiled by my Great Uncle Bertie in 1948. I have added
up-dates for Gordon's who have left Ireland for South Africa, New Zealand,
Australia, England and Canada. My Father Frederick George Gordon Jr. left
Ireland in 1919 and settled in Toronto, Ontario and where we remain.

I would like to up-date the McAdam side of the Family and look forward to
sharing information.

Kindest Regards,
Maureen Williams (nee Gordon)
